LOCAL professional golfers had a promising start after yesterday’s opening round of the R750 000 Sun Sibiya Challenge at the Mount Edgecombe Country Club in Durban, South Africa, where they all recorded under-par scores.

The players, who include Ryan Cairns, Marc Cayeux, Greg Bentley and Mohamed Rauf Mandhu, are part of the field whose cut will be determined this afternoon.

Cairns and Cayeux completed the opening round on three-under 69.

Borrowdale Brooke-based Bentley is a shot behind on two under 70 while Cairns and Cayeux had good rounds after they all missed out in last week’s Hwange Open.

The duo are tied on position 22nd with several other golfers with Bentley in 35th place while Mandhu, who finished one-under, is placed in 50th place because of ties.

A total 146 professional golfers took to the field.

Seasoned campaigner, Oliver Bekker, who already has three wins on the Sunshine Tour this season, shot a nine-under-par 63 for a share of the first-round lead.

Bekker is tied with Herman Loubser at the top of the leaderboard.
