Local hero takes on mental health and drug abuse crisis

By Jerry Chifamba

In response to Zimbabwe’s growing drug abuse crisis, William Tongai Mukondiwa, founder of Protection Against Drug Abuse and Dependency Foundation Trust (ProDad), is leading a revolutionary approach to mental health support and drug abuse prevention.

This is being done through community-based initiatives launched from their headquarters in Zimbabwe since 2016.

“We are not just fighting drug abuse but battling a global pandemic that has become the third leading killer,” says Mukondiwa, whose organisation has emerged as a beacon of hope in communities struggling with substance abuse and mental health challenges.
ProDad’s innovative approach combines preventive education with practical support, targeting both youth and adults.

The foundation works to equip young people with essential coping skills while educating adults about creating environments that promote positive mental health.

“Our youth need more than just warnings about drugs; they need real tools to handle life’s pressures,” Mukondiwa said.

“When we empower them with knowledge and coping strategies, we give them alternatives to substance abuse.”

The foundation has forged powerful partnerships with organisations like Ndibate Ruoko Trust and Simba Arts, creating a comprehensive support network that combines philanthropy with educational entertainment to deliver their message effectively.

Looking ahead, ProDad has ambitious plans to establish accessible and affordable rehabilitation hubs across the country.

Their newest initiatives include a Digital Health Literacy programme that aims to bridge the technology gap in healthcare access, particularly focusing on marginalised communities.

“Mental health support should not be a luxury,” Mukondiwa emphasised. “By making these resources more accessible and affordable, we can reach those who need help the most before it is too late.”

The foundation’s holistic approach extends beyond mental health to address fundamental community needs through its Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Project, recognising the crucial connection between economic stability and mental well-being.

For those interested in supporting ProDad’s mission or seeking assistance, the foundation welcomes volunteers and continues to expand its reach through community partnerships and innovative programs designed to combat the rising tide of substance abuse in Zimbabwe.
