THE Muslim community in Zimbabwe has joined the rest of the Islamic world in commemorating the Ramadan month, including the traditional fast, which started yesterday.
Islamic leader in Zimbabwe and businessman Mr Moulana Mohammed Ismail said Ramadan is a significant month for many Muslim people that involves prayer, fasting, spending time with family and friends and more.
“The Muslims of Zimbabwe join the rest of the Islamic world in observing fasting in the month of Ramadan,” said Mr Ismail.
“This sacred month ushered in by the sighting of the crescent, is the most important month in the Islamic calendar.
“Ramadan is a blessed month. The revelation of the Quran, the Islamic sacred book started in this month. This sacred month is an opportunity for Muslims to attain closeness to God by various acts of worship.”
“The main form of worship in this month is fasting. Muslims fast by abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations from dawn to dusk”.
Ramadan goes on for 29 or 30 days and ends with the sighting of the crescent of the month of Shawwal.
This is followed by the Eid al-Fitr festival which is an occasion of joy and prayer for the successful completion of Ramadan.
Mr Ismail said the other good deeds which are integral to Ramadan include reading the Quran, being charitable to the less fortunate members of the community, abstaining from sins and evil deeds, remembering God and supplicating to him.
Mr Ismail said Ramadan is a special month which is cherished throughout the entire Islamic world.
He said the Muslims of Zimbabwe are eager to join the rest of the Islamic world on this rewarding and fulfilling spiritual journey.
