Local transport operator targeted, attacked by political opponents

Chronicle Writer

The tranquil village of Zwehamba in Maphisa finds itself in the grip of fear and uncertainty as Nkululeko Ncube, a well-loved local figure, has gone into hiding. Ncube, who owned a private commuter omnibus, was known for providing transportation services to small-scale gold miners in the area. However, the political season in Zimbabwe saw him become the target of suspicion and violence from Zanu-PF supporters, leaving his family destitute.

Ncube’s reputation as a compassionate and hospitable transport operator made him popular among the small-scale miners who relied on him for their daily commute. His deep roots in the community only strengthened his rapport with those he served.

Unfortunately, with the onset of the political season, Ncube came under suspicion from Zanu-PF supporters, who believed he was secretly facilitating opposition activists to hold rallies in the area. The unfounded accusations quickly escalated into acts of aggression directed towards Ncube, his commuter omnibus, and even his family.

Assailants targeted Ncube’s vehicle, severely damaging it in multiple attacks. The violence did not stop there, as one of the huts at Ncube’s homestead was set ablaze, causing substantial damage and further distress for his family.

In light of these relentless attacks and the growing concern for his safety, Ncube was left with no choice but to go into hiding. A close relative, who wishes to remain anonymous due to safety concerns, lamented the unfortunate situation that has befallen Ncube and his family. They said, “Nkululeko has been forced to go into hiding, leaving his loved ones behind. With the destruction of his commuter omnibus, their main source of income, they are now facing extreme hardship and destitution.”

The relative further added, “Nkululeko dedicated himself to serving the community, providing transportation for the small-scale miners who rely on him. It is heartbreaking to see how a false accusation can tear apart lives and leave innocent people vulnerable.”

Efforts to reach out to Zanu-PF representatives for comment on the allegations made against them were unsuccessful at the time of writing this article.

As Zwehamba village reels from the repercussions of this targeted violence, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding individuals and their livelihoods from the disruptive effects of political unrest. The community stands united in support of Nkululeko Ncube and his family, urging authorities to take immediate action to ensure their safety and bring the perpetrators to justice.
