The tourney is the biggest school chess tournament in the country and last year there were more than 30 teams taking part.
This year the organisers expected the number to increase. The tournament, which was introduced in 2022 has grown with several private and government schools confirming their availability for the weekend tournament.
Maurice Mutowembwa, the tournament director, said all is now in place for the event.

“There will be two sections; one for the seniors and another for the juniors. The senior teams comprise of Form Four up to Form Six students and the junior team will be from primary level up to Form Three students.
“There will be juniors and seniors’ categories for both girls and boys.
“Each team will be made up of four players for both divisions.
“There will be special prizes for the best performing primary school team and each team is expected to bring chess sets to enable the smooth running of the tournament,” said Mutowembwa in the official invitation to possible participants.
