SABLES winger Edward Sigauke says he wants to make the most of the opportunity that has been given to him after he completed his move to top English rugby union side Harlequins.
The 22-year-old star has joined the two-time English champions in the year the club are celebrating the 160th year of their anniversary.
“This is a new chapter for me, and I want to make the most of it – working hard every day, learning from the players and coaches around me,” he said.
Sigauke will join his teammates on Tuesday next week.
Harlequins coach Jason Gilmore says they banked on potential when they signed Sigauke.
He has played 12 times for the Sables, scoring eight tries, after making his international debut two years ago.
Harlequins are an English professional rugby union club and play in the Gallagher PREM, the top level of the sport in England.
They are based in London.
Gilmore said:
“Eddie is a player we’ve been tracking and we’re really pleased to get his signing over the line.
“He’s got tremendous speed and footwork that makes him a real handful for any defence, and we believe he’s got all the raw tools to become a weapon for us out wide.
“What excites us most is his potential – he’s still developing as a player, and we can’t wait to see how he grows within our environment as he takes the next steps in his career.”
Sigauke will join his new teammates from Tuesday in preparation for the new campaign, which begins with a Prem Rugby Cup home game against Leicester four days later.
The club, which was founded in 1866 as “Hampstead Football Club”, split the following year with some of the membership forming Wasps FC.
Three years later Hampstead renamed itself Harlequins and became one of the founding members of the Rugby Football union in 1871.
For more than a hundred years, Harlequins had been one of the top UK teams during the amateur era and this continued with the introduction of professionalism in 1995.
The club have been champions of England twice, winning the title in 2012 and most recently in 2021.
They won the European Challenge Cup in 2001, 2004 and 2011, the joint most wins of any team in the competition, and the domestic cup in 1988, 1991 and 2013.
They remain the only founding club member of the RFU still in the top-flight of English rugby.
Harlequins have the largest social media following of any club in the Premiership and the second largest of any club in Europe, after Stade Toulousain. — Sports ReporterBC Sport/Agencies
