Longest hair in Manicaland?

A VUMBA man, who believes has the longest hair in Manicaland province, has set his sight on breaking world records and feature in the Guinness Book of Records.

The Weekender this week caught up with Moses Zviitozvashe Chawasema (43) who revealed that he had kept his hair for the past 21 years and was determined to keep it longer for the rest of his life and possibly break 79-year old Vietnamese herbalist Tran Van Hay’s record.

Chawasema’s hair is 1, 63 metres long.

At the time of his death, Tran Van Hay’s hair was over 6,8 meters long and weighed around 10,5 kilograms.

Although he never got his hair officially measured and acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Records, Tran was widely known as the man with the longest hair in the world.

“I love my hair. In fact I want to break world records,” said Chawasema.

“I believe I can do it. I still have 43 years, if God wills, at 80 years I can surpass the records. I know that sounds ridiculous but it’s achievable,” said the seemingly confident Chawasema, who is a motor mechanic based in Vumba.

He added: “I take care of my hair. I am disciplined. I wash it with free running water and no chemicals.”

He said, unlike the general notion that dreadlocks and long hair were associated with drugs, he was a disciplined and God-fearing man who smokes and takes alcohol responsibly.

“I don’t do drugs. I am a disciplined family man who smokes and drinks responsibly. Motor mechanics is my art. I am happily married with four daughters. My children usually play with hair and they love it,” Chawasema said.

Unlike for Tran, who couldn’t work as a farmer because of the heavy hair he had to balance on top of his head, Chawasema can conduct his work well without any problems.
