The Herald, April 19, 1983
ZANU PF Mashonaland West Province is planning to build a monument near Chinhoyi at the site of the Chinhoyi Battle of April 1966.
A report carried in the April edition of Zimbabwe News, the official organ of the party, said that the seven heroes that fell at the first battle of the Chimurenga war of liberation should be honoured by both the province and the nation.
The Chinhoyi Battle is recognised as the beginning of the Chimurenga war of national liberation.
The party has launched several programmes in the province including the formation of co-operatives, people militias and building brigades.
The party has held several rallies to politicise and mobilise the masses explaining to them Government policies, programmes and listening to their grievances.
Some of the grievances aired by people in the province include low wages, long working hours for farm workers, threatened dismissals in mines and overcharging by rural traders.
Small-scale farmers were noted for not paying the stipulated minimum wage.
LESSONS FOR TODAY
The recognition of important dates or events in the history of a country is a very important issue. The Second Republic appreciates this and has a programme to honour gallant sons and daughters who lost their lives while liberating the country.
Already, a statue of Mbuya Nehanda has been erected in Harare and a number of memorials are planned for different parts of the country including the Chinhoyi Battle site.
Continuous updating of the masses on Government programmes is critical to ensure transparency and the inculcation of a buy-in of the masses is critical.
Government has been giving regular updates of its infrastructural developments such as road construction, which has earned it pundits.
There is need to continuously look at the concerns of the working class and to address such challenges. Government on its part has been seized with the welfare of civil servants and has been announcing improved packages in recent months while encouraging employers in the private sector to do the same.
