‘Lovers’ arrested over abortion

A Victoria Falls businessman man has been arrested for allegedly impregnating a juvenile girl and helping her to terminate the pregnancy by giving her abortion pills.

Given Nsingo (25) of 6613 Mkhosana owns a fleet of tourist transfer vehicles and operates a number of tuckshops around Victoria Falls.

He was allegedly in a sexual relationship with the 17-year-old girl who is in Form Three at a local private college.
The girl, name withheld for ethical reasons, discovered that she was three months pregnant recently and with the help of Nsingo, had an abortion last week.

It is alleged that after terminating the pregnancy, the girl was assisted by her mother to bury the foetus in a garden in their yard.

Neighbours who suspected foul play alerted police who upon investigating discovered that the girl had terminated the pregnancy. She was arrested together with Nsingo and the two are jointly charged with unlawful termination of pregnancy.

The duo was supposed to appear in court yesterday before Victoria Falls magistrate Mr Goodwill Mavenge but the case was referred back to police for further investigations. They will be summoned back to court on February 20. The girl’s mother was not arrested.

According to the court papers, Nsingo was arrested on Monday.

“In that on the 27th of December 2023 and at a tuck shop behind Chinotimba Medical Centre the second accused person Given Nsingo who is jointly charged with the first accused, a female juvenile aged 17 years unlawfully and intentionally assisted the first accused to terminate her pregnancy by giving her abortion pills,” read the charge sheet.

The girl led police to the site where they had buried the foetus and it was exhumed. She was referred to hospital for medical examination.

Teenage pregnancy

A number of cases of juveniles falling pregnant have been on the rise in the country with that of Tsholotsho 8-year-old girl who gave birth in Bulawayo recently most prominent.
