LOW scores were the order of the day in the first matches of the new year in the 2022/23 Logan Cup first class competition yesterday.
In the rain affected match between Mega Market Mountaineers and Southern Rocks at Old Hararians, only 24 overs were played on day one, with former finishing on 96-4. In the other encounter featuring log leaders Eagles and Rhinos at Kwekwe Sports Club, the table toppers were bowled out for 92 and Rhinos finished on 102-4, leading by 10 runs.
In the capital, Timycen Maruma scored half century number 32 for Mountaineers in his first-class career as finished unbeaten on 52 runs at stumps. With him in the middle was Peter Moor who ended on 11 runs not out. The other batsman to record double figures was Spencer Magodo who fell for 16 runs.
With the ball for Rocks, Cuthbert Musoko took two wickets while Travor Mutsamba and Takudzwa Chataira took one each as bad light brought the match to a premature end.
In Kwekwe, Eagles were bowled out for their lowest total of the season with the team’s top scorer being Tinashe Kamunhukamwe with 35 runs. Only three batsmen managed to cross double figures, Larvet Masunda, Faraz Akram and Tanaka Chivanga scoring 11, 12 and 12 runs respectively.
Leading wicket taker in the Pro50 Championship, spinner Brandon Mavuta once again starred with the ball for Rhinos taking five wickets to finish with figures of 5-17 in 9.5 overs. On the other end, Mavuta was supported by Antum Naqvi who finished with 4-22 in seven overs. The other wicket was taken by Tafara Chingwara.
With the bat, Rhinos managed to secure a lead as bad light brought play to an end. Johnathan Campbell fell four runs short of a half century on 46 runs while Kiran Carlson remained unbeaten on 30 runs as they are looking at taking advantage in the match.
Tapiwa Mufudza finished with two wickets for Eagles and the other two scalps were taken by Kudzai Maunze and Tanaka Chivanga.
