MANDLA “Lulu” Mpofu picked up his first away point in the Botswana Premier Soccer League when Masitaoka played to a 1-1 draw with Mogoditshane Fighters at Molepolole Sports Complex on Saturday.
Mpofu has been in charge of eight league matches since moving to Botswana, winning four at home, losing three on the road and playing to a draw at Mogoditshane. The wins were against Security Systems (1-0), Holy Ghost (2-0), Police XI (2-0) and
Botswana giants Township Rollers who they clobbered 3-0 last week.
Masitaoka’s away defeats were against Orapa United (3-1), Eleven Angels (1-0) and BDF XI (2-1).
Following the weekend’s draw, Masitaoka remained glued on position six with 13 points from eight games and they now trail leaders Gaborone United, who they face on Wednesday, by nine points.
Mpofu was content with the point.
“It’s good to go for a big game without losing. We’ve got a relatively young squad and they deserve a pat on the back for fighting from a goal down to get a point. This is our first point away from home and we hope to get more.
“Now our focus turns to the big game against the table toppers Gaborone United,” Mpofu said.
Ex-Bulawayo City gaffer Philani Ncube recovered from last weekend’s heavy 4-0 defeat at Gaborone United as Nico United shares spoils in a 0-0 home draw against Eleven Angels.
Nico United are a point above relegation on position 13 in the 16-team league having amassed seven points from eight outings.
Ncube is hunting for at least two strikers to solve his goal scoring problems. They travel to Extension Gunners, who they are tied with on seven points for their last match of the year to be played on Thursday.
Avoiding defeat and staying above relegation heading to the January transfer window is what Ncube hopes for.
Meanwhile, Taurai Mangwiro’s Orapa United suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Sua Flamingoes, a team formerly coached by Zimbabwean mentor Rahman Gumbo. Former Caps United striker Dominic Chungwa scored one of Sua Flamingoes’ goals as they moved four places up the table to position nine with nine points after eight matches. —@ZililoR
