Lungu seeks divine help

LUSAKA. — Zambian President Edgar Lungu seems to have on Sunday struck the divine chord Zambia has long been waiting for to win God’s favour.

His declaration of October 18 as a national day of repentance, prayer and fasting and a public holiday has received widespread support across the nation.

Christian mother bodies, individual pastors, political parties and ordinary citizens gladly welcomed the holiday.

On Sunday, President Lungu declared that the day of repentance, prayer and fasting will be commemorated every year on October 18.

He made the proclamation at the Lusaka Showgrounds during the first observance of the day, which also was done in all the provinces of the country.

The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), Independent Churches in Zambia (ICOZ) and Bible Gospel Church in Central Africa (BIGOCA) have all welcomed the President’s proclamation.

EFZ executive director Pukuta Mwanza said in an interview in Lusaka that his organisation had received the declaration as gratifying and the surest way of sustaining Zambia’s declaration as a Christian nation.

“We are delighted with his pronouncement. Zambia still stands as a centre of influence in the region and the world as a whole, for the peace and unity that reigns, which many countries could have loved to have,” he said. — Zambia Daily Mail.
