LUPANE will not play host to any event of the rebranded Zimbabwe National Youth Games after the district declared that it had no suitable sporting facilities.

The district will, however, provide accommodation for athletes at the Lupane State University and Fatima High School after the two institutions told the games’ delegation touring facilities that they were capable of providing decent accommodation during the two week period from August 17-27.

“Lupane has told us that they have no capacity to host the games, but accommodation will be available. School officials at Fatima High School said they were prepared and ready to offer accommodation,” said Sport and Recreation Commission spokesperson Tirivashe Nheweyembwa.

More than 15 000 athletes and officials will descend on Matabeleland North for the games, whose official launch is at the Edmund Davies Hall in Hwange tonight.

The launch will be presided over by Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs Minister Cain Mathema.
