The community of Shabula village in Lupane, Matabeleland North province is in shock following the tragic death of 80-year-old Thomas Wamundila Mathe in a suspected case of arson attack.

Mathe, a well-known Citizens Coalition for Change activist, reportedly died in his bedroom hut after it was set ablaze while he slept.

Mathe, together with his son Mbiyana Mathe, had been actively involved in recruiting members for the political party and had previously been targeted for their political activities. A relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed fear for their safety following the deadly attack.

“We are now living in fear following the arson attack on our uncle. The night he died, a huge crowd descended on our homestead singing and saying they wanted to deal with us. We don’t know who could have done this to him,” the relative said.

The police are currently investigating the incident and have yet to make any arrests. Meanwhile, the community is mourning the loss of Thomas Wamundila Mathe, a dedicated community member and political activist.
