Thupeyo Muleya, Beitbridge Bureau
A 23-YEAR-OLD Gwanda man has been slapped with a 15-year jail term after he lured a Beitbridge woman into a bush at midnight, strangled and raped her.
Ashley Ndlovu hatched a twisted plan by lying to the unsuspecting woman, also 23, that her boyfriend wanted to meet her by the roadside near her Swereki homestead.
According to State prosecutor Willbrought Muleya, the incident happened on 17 August.
When the woman stepped out of her home to meet her supposed boyfriend, Ndlovu ambushed her, grabbed her by the neck and dragged her deeper into the bush.
There, he raped her while tightening his grip around her throat to stop her from screaming.
But the brave victim fought back. After the horrific ordeal, she managed to overpower Ndlovu and escape.
She rushed to nearby villagers who swiftly responded, tracked down the suspect and handed him over to the police.
Despite denying the charge, Ndlovu was convicted after a full trial before Beitbridge regional magistrate Charity Maphosa, who described his actions as cruel and calculated.
He will serve 15 years behind bars.
