Lusumbani Queens in mixed fortunes

SOUTHERN Region Division One Netball League outfit Lusumbani Queens experienced mixed fortunes when they played back-to-back fixtures against Amhlophe High School and Fairbridge.

Lusumbani had a relatively easy encounter against a less experienced Amhlophe High side, hammering the schoolgirls 57-12 on Saturday. The following day, they faced a much tougher opponent in the form of Fairbridge and lost 24-30.

Club chairperson Thembinkosi Muremba said they played a good game against Amhlophe and deserved to win because “our players were sharp and displayed good ball handling skills against a team that comprised players without experience at league level”.

“It would have been disappointing to lose to them. Their players still have a lot to learn about the nature of the league. We have respect for all teams in the league as a formidable contender. Our players used experience to win challenges and our highest scorer Emma Nyoni notched 25, thanks to Amhlophe’s poor marking,” said Muremba.

However, against Fairbridge, it was a different ball game altogether and Muremba lamented what he called a poor job by the match umpire.

“Fairbridge was a tough match and our players were stretched to their limits. It was a very physical game and I believe the umpire was just not sharp on the day. He seemed to miss all our penalties and I don’t know if it was because the game was fast paced or he just wasn’t in the game,” Muremba said.

Results: Lobengula Queens 47-18 Sobukhazi High School, Freestars 36-23 ZRP Ntabazinduna, Amhlophe High School 12-57 Lusumbami Queens, Fairbridge 30-24 Lusumbami Queens, Delta Ntutu Sparrows 45-18 ZPC, Lupane State University 42-18 Amhlophe High School.

Today’s fixture: Jumbo Queens v Fairbridge
