BULAWAYO’S Luveve High School celebrated its 50th anniversary on Friday with a well attended speech and prize giving day.
Parents, guardians, relatives and friends of pupils, former pupils, educators, and invited guests all gathered to mark the school’s 50 years in existence since it opened in 1966.
Speakers praised the school’s diversity and teachers.
“You children are the reason why we are here. Thank you for being Luveve High School pupils,” headmistress Getrude Ndlovu said.
The guest of honour, Dr Wedu Ndebele, a specialist paediatrician, issued a proclamation recognising the school’s dedication to educational excellence, calling the anniversary a milestone, momentous and grand occasion.
He said: “It is a special moment where we are gathered here to celebrate a golden jubilee of educating the nation and of rewarding excellence for the class of 2016. It gives me pride to associate with an institution that has churned out renowned leaders, CEOs, academics, sports and cultural personalities of which I am one.
“To the parents who are gathered here and have children attending this prestigious institution that is celebrating a pedigree of consistent and unwavering educational service to the nation. We appreciate the efforts you make to raise your children in these challenging times and the fact that you recognise that education is vital for their nurturing.
“Educating children may ostensibly seem costly but so does ignorance, as an uneducated child will later find himself or herself a misfit in society. It is dangerous not to educate the community especially the young,” he said.
Dr Ndebele said the school needed financial support to stay afloat and to replace aging infrastructure.
“It goes without saying that the school is confronted with infrastructure that has outlived its tenure. This therefore means that the school has a burden to refurbish its aged infrastructure in order to remain competitive in today’s cutting age society.
Financial support, infrastructural development and proper reticulation cannot be divorced from quality education. John Maxwell says ‘the only adequate preparation of tomorrow is the right use of today’. So parents support your school by playing your part in paying fees and other dues.
“I note that the school is riding on a legacy of great achievement as the most preferred school, which we need to uphold and surpass as enunciated in today’s theme — ‘The Luveve We Want!’ As parents we are important actors in the unfolding drama of Luveve High School, “Dr Ndebele said.
The anniversary celebration was capped off with the cutting of a post-celebration cake and lunch that was served to all guests.
