Macheso scales up anti-piracy effort

CELEBRATED sungura maestro Alick Macheso has devised a mechanism of beating piracy for his forthcoming album by not sampling complete tracks from it.

Speaking during a well attended show at Dzonzayi Bar in Chipinge’s Gaza recently where he gave a flawless performance, Macheso, affectionately known as Baba Shero, said he had come up with an effective way to beat piracy.

He said a lot of artistes including him were affected as their music usually hits the streets well before the albums are officially released to the public.

“I can see that you’ve taken your android cellphones, ready to record videos of my band playing here. This time you will not win, (hamulume). We’ve realised that we lose revenue unnecessarily so we’re not going to play songs from the forthcoming album in the correct order of lyrics so as to beat piracy.

“More often we find our music in the market before the releases and other musicians face the same fate,” said Macheso.

“Some fans would want to create their own studios through recording our live shows then print the discs for sale. Once beaten twice, shy. We won’t be caught unaware this time around,” he said.

The man who had a failed attempt at polygamy when he parted ways with Tafadzwa Mapako in an acrimonious divorce that saw him being dragged to court last year, was on top of his game and serenaded fans all night.

When asked about the new album, Macheso said: “We’re still waiting for the production of the album. We recorded it in South Africa and the challenge that we have is with producers who are taking their time. When you decide to use other people’s pots and kitchens to cook your own food, you won’t be having full control.

“However, I promise that the wait will be over soon, it will be out and fans will not be disappointed.”
