MUSIC lovers are in for a sizzling treat as sungura maestro Alick Macheso and Zora music king Leonard Zhakata are set to headline the Silala Music Festival at the Berea Madzonga Resort in Venda, Limpopo tomorrow.
This marks Macheso’s second appearance at the cross-border fiesta since its 2024 debut—this time bringing heavyweight reinforcement in the form of Zhakata.
The Zimbabwean legends will share the stage with some of South Africa’s top artistes, including Makhadzi of Ma Gear fame, rising star Shebeshxt, Limpopo groove master Benny Mayengani, the ever-controversial Zodwa Wabantu and nostalgic hitmakers Dalom Kids.
The line-up also features a wave of local Limpopo talent such as Vhuyie Da DJ, Khakhathi, Mukololo, Zozo and Sengere Super Beat, Just Ice, Shufflers, Rude Kid and Sikiza Boys.
Located just 120km from Beitbridge, the event presents a golden opportunity for Zimbabwean fans to witness a musical fusion that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of communities along the Limpopo River valley.
Alick Macheso’s manager, Tich Makahamadze, said sungura music has always been a favourite among the people of Limpopo, owing to linguistic and cultural similarities between the Shona and Venda communities.
He noted that Limpopo has become a second home for Macheso and the Orchestra Mberikwazo band, as they always receive an overwhelming reception in Venda.
“We always enjoy performing in Limpopo because the people there make us feel at home. Beyond Macheso, sungura is very popular in Venda, they celebrate and embrace it as if it were their own.
“I believe the similarities in language and culture have made it easier for sungura to penetrate the Venda market, as they can relate to and understand many of the Shona discourses embedded in the music,” he said.
With Macheso having worked on several projects with his adopted “daughter” Makhadzi, one of which includes the track Shampopo featuring another Zimbabwean creative, Mr Brown, Makahamadze said there’s a possibility Macheso and Makhadzi will perform one or two songs together on stage.
“Macheso is a father figure to many artistes who draw inspiration from his personality and music. Makhadzi is one of the young creatives who shares a strong relationship with him. Since they’ll be sharing the same platform, surprise performances together are more than likely,” said Makahamadze.
The countdown has begun and with Macheso and Zhakata in the mix, this festival promises nothing short of fireworks.
