A daring machete gang launched a brazen attack on a mining operation in Esigodini, making off with gold worth an estimated US$200,000. The incident occurred during the early hours of Monday morning, catching security personnel and workers off guard.
According to eyewitnesses, the gang, believed to be a well-organised criminal outfit, stormed the mine wielding machetes and other crude weapons. The attackers quickly overpowered the mine’s security personnel, leaving them incapacitated and unable to respond.
During the raid, the assailants targeted the mine’s gold processing facility, where they meticulously extracted gold from various processing stages. With a swift and methodical approach, the gang managed to seize a substantial quantity of gold before fleeing the scene.
The mine’s management promptly alerted the local authorities, who initiated an extensive search operation in an attempt to apprehend the perpetrators. However, at the time of reporting, the gang remains at large, and the police are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
Incidents of machete-wielding gangs have been a growing concern in the region, leading to calls for enhanced security measures and stricter law enforcement. Local mining communities have expressed anxiety and frustration over the escalating crime wave, which has posed serious threats to both their safety and livelihoods.
This has forced police to launch a dragnet operation code-named “Chikorokoza Ngachipere/ Isitsheketsha Kasiphele & No to Machete Gangs”.
As investigations continue, the mining company is assessing its security protocols to prevent future occurrences. Authorities are also working closely with neighboring jurisdictions to track down the gang and recover the stolen gold.
