SUNGURA legend Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria must be smiling in his grave as the impressive body of art he built over the years is now in safe hands.
The former Khiama Boys leader died on December 11 last year, at the age of 69, after a long battle with diabetes. His nephew and former manager, Lazarus Zakaria, took over the reins and appears to have learned a lot from the late singer.
Last weekend, Lazarus showcased his talent during two shows, where he performed as Suluman Chimbetu and Kurai Makore’s supporting act.
The 29-year-old performed at Mushandirapamwe Hotel on Friday in Highfield, Harare, and held his second gig at Steakhouse Leisure Centre in Waterfalls. In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Lazarus said he was humbled by the reception he received over the weekend.
“I can’t thank God enough for the support we received last weekend when we resumed live shows, six months after Madzibaba’s death,” said the new Khiama Boys Legacy frontman.
“We have been rehearsing at home for the past months and I think we are now in the right space to go.
“I was humbled by the support that we received at the weekend and we feel being loved.
“I think I should give credit to Mukoma Sulu, who gave us the platform to be his curtain raisers.
“In this industry it is hard to get this kind of love and feedback.”
Lazarus, who also doubles as a farmer, said he was taught the craft by the late music legend, although he preferred to take on the managerial role.
“I have always been a singer but I concentrated much on running Madzibaba’s business affairs.
“I know many people were surprised that I could sing, but singing is something that I have learnt over the years.I can safely say that I thoroughly enjoy music, although many people only realised I can sing now.
“I was blown away by the feedback received when I recently shared a video of us rehearsing with the boys, as my phone was inundated with calls.”
Despite the rave reviews he has been receiving, Lazarus vowed to stay level-headed.
“I know many people have been waiting for this moment, but we are not going to rest on our laurels.
“In fact, the feedback is going to motivate us to continue working hard. I am glad to be working with a dedicated team,” he said.
He added:“I am dealing with family men at Khiama Boys Legacy, and I know what is expected of me.
“As their former manager, it was never difficult for me to engage them. I enjoy their company and I am ready to serve them with distinction.“As it stands right now, I am more than ready to learn from them. I don’t know everything, and I am not shy to learn new things from my troupe.”
Lazarus retained most of Madzibaba’s band members.
Nasho Azati is the only notable returnee on bass guitar.
Other band members include Forget Chikama, Knowledge Kapfuti, Herbert Dombo, Ezra Zakaria, Dennis Furawu, Nelson Mutanda, Wellington Sande, Miles Kasenje, and Rodwell Cheuka.
