FORMER Zimbabwe Handball Federation president, Amon Madzvamuse, who recently returned from a cestoball workshop in Bangalore, India, has unveiled the long-awaited sport to schoolchildren.
The introduction ceremony in Harare yesterday featured pupils from Allan Wilson, Prince Edward High, Harare Girls High School, Houghton Park Primary School and Glen View 1 Primary School.
Also present were executive members of the Zimbabwe Cestoball Association.
They included vice-president Anna Maria Jirimwe, secretary-general Uvert Ndlovu and technical referees and coaches chairman, Lydia Chitambo.
“This is just a demonstration match because all along the sport was like a pregnancy but now it is like we are giving birth,’’ said Madzamuse, who is the organisation’s president.
The association is yet to get clearance from Nash and Naph for them to start playing the sport during the school terms.
Madzvamuse explained to all the stakeholders how the six-player team game is played.
“Cestoball is a 40-minute six-a-side game and, unlike basketball, you don’t bounce the ball but throw it into a basket.”
Students from the schools that were present at the ceremony were given a glimpse of the rules and regulations by the All Races Tribe Team, captained by Natasha Arubia.
Madzvamuse was full of praise of the Sports Commission and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education for allowing the association to introduce the sport code.
School teachers, who were present at the ceremony, welcomed the sport.
“It is a good thing to invent new things for the pupil,” said Ngoni Mhonda from Houghton Park Primary School.
