Jean-Pierre Kingombe, a 49-year-old man, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison by the Harare Magistrates’ Court for defrauding a local resident of US$10 500 in a deceptive fake money duplication scam.

The prosecution presented compelling evidence that in October 2022, Kingombe, alongside an accomplice who remains at large, lured the victim into believing they could duplicate currency through ‘magic.’

After performing a demonstration with smaller amounts, the victim was convinced to hand over US$ 7 000 for the alleged duplication process. Instead of returning with duplicated cash, Kingombe swapped the money for blank papers.

Encouraged by the promise of wealth, the victim later provided an additional US$3 500 for what Kingombe claimed were ‘special chemicals’ and ‘accommodation.’ Following this, Kingombe became increasingly evasive.

In a separate but similar case, Kingombe faces further charges for defrauding local businessman, Nyasha Masoka, of US$100 000 using the same deceitful tactics.

The State alleges that in December 2023, Kingombe, along with accomplices Munetsi and the still-at-large Isaac, targeted Masoka, who was a longtime friend of Munetsi.

On December 4, the trio approached Masoka at his workplace, claiming to be magicians capable of multiplying cash.

They conducted a convincing test, appearing to multiply US$ 10 into US$30, which piqued Masoka’s interest.

Encouraged by this demonstration, Munetsi persuaded Masoka to provide a larger sum, assuring him it would significantly boost his business.

On December 7, Kingombe and another accomplice, only identified as Kamuproko, visited Masoka at home.

After a reassuring call from Munetsi about the deal’s success, Masoka agreed to part with US$ 100 000, believing it would be multiplied to US$300 000.

However, when Masoka checked after the waiting period, he discovered he had been deceived; he found only a bundle of paper instead of cash.
