BULAWAYO musician Willy Power’s hit song Umbhida Emazinyweni has crossed Zimbabwe’s borders, attracting the attention of South African content creators.
The song has gained traction among South African online personalities, including Thick Dudle and McCloud, who have featured Umbhida Emazinyweni in their videos, giving the Bulawayo musician exposure to audiences across the border.
The growing attention has put the 23-year-old artist in the spotlight as he continues to establish himself with his self-styled Afro-fusion sound, which he calls “Magwangwa.”
Willy Power, whose real name is Major Phiri, said his music is rooted in everyday life and experiences.
“I make Afro Fusion. I call my style Magwangwa — music that speaks real life. We sing what people know and are scared to say. Magwangwa is taking a freestyle to the studio and turning it into official music,” he said.
The musician who grew up in Filabusi and Emakhandeni in Bulawayo, started making music in 2018.
He said his decision to pursue music was driven by “a spiritual calling.”
“My spirit forced me,” he said.
Willy Power has released more than 30 songs, although Umbhida Emazinyweni has emerged as the track giving him the most noticeable cross-border attention.
His other songs include Jerejeje, Go Ahead, Revenge, Amanzi Aqandayo, Sengizakuthakatha, Kuyafana and Isingene Yonke.
Beyond making music, Willy Power said his work is also intended to entertain listeners and offer them relief from everyday pressures.
“My music is about hustle, hope, and honesty. I also make people laugh and feel stress-free,” he said.
With Umbhida Emazinyweni now finding an audience among South African content creators, Willy Power is hoping to build on the song’s momentum as he works on new material.
For the Bulawayo musician, the cross-border reception of the song is a sign of how social media can give locally produced music an audience beyond its traditional market.
