OLD MAGWEGWE residents were left in shock after a 54-year-old man who openly told a neighbour he wanted to kill himself was later found dead in his room.
Police confirmed that Zebron Phiri, was discovered with a rope around his neck in his Old Magwegwe home on Sunday morning.
In a chilling encounter the day before, Phiri reportedly confided in his 78-year-old neighbour that life had become unbearable.
“While having a conversation, the now deceased highlighted to her that he wanted to commit suicide due to economic hardship and that his children are not taking care of him,” police said in a statement.
He went further, telling the neighbour exactly how he planned to die.
“He further stated that he was going to hang himself inside his room and shall leave the doors and windows open so that people will easily find his body,” read the statement.
True to his word, the following morning his neighbour noticed the doors and windows wide open. When her calls went unanswered, she raised alarm and another resident joined her to check inside the house.
“They then entered into the house and they found his lifeless body lying down facing upwards with a rope on his neck and the other part of the rope hanging from the truss,” police confirmed.
The devastated neighbour quickly notified relatives before police were called.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Msebele Nomalanga urged communities not to ignore such cries for help.
“We encourage members of the public to take seriously conversations about suicide and suicide tendency and seek professional help for the concerned parties,” she said.
