Magnificent!

Marvellous!

Mesmerising!

Minister Micheal Mahendere embodied all three as he graced the stage at the recently concluded July Worship Music Festival (JWMF) at Belgravia Sports Club in Harare.

Despite the chilly weather, gospel lovers thronged the venue, creating an electric atmosphere filled with faith and exuberance.

The event kicked off in the afternoon and ran until 9:30pm. Mahendere shared the spotlight with a stellar line-up of talented artistes, including Blessing Jedthun, Eleana Makombe, Nyasha Mutonhori, Cleo Arie, and Samantha Harry.

Each performer brought their unique flair to the stage, transforming the show into a delightful blend of music and family fun.

What set this festival apart was its family-friendly atmosphere.

Alongside the music, exhibitors showcased their wares and there were jumping rides for children, creating a vibrant fiesta before the main acts took centre stage. Each supporting artiste was allocated 45 minutes to shine, with Mahendere closing the event with an impressive 2 and half hour performance, ensuring fans received their money’s worth.

The show opened with rising star Cleo Arie, who captivated the audience with her youthful energy and hip-hop flair. This marked her first introduction to the corporate world, sharing the stage with industry giants and she certainly did not disappoint.

Following her was her big sister in ministry, Nyasha Mutonhori. Clad in a stunning red outfit that matched her backing vocalists, she led the crowd in a spirited worship session, performing some of her hit songs that uplifted everyone in attendance.

As if that wasn’t enough, South African-based Zimbabwean musician Blessing Jedthun took the stage next. He performed crowd favourites like “Kwatabva Kure” and “Ndinoda Iwe,” with the highlight coming when Minister Mahendere joined him for an impromptu duet.

The crowd erupted with joy, marking the peak of the show.

The energy continued to build with Eleana Makombe, who started her set with lively dance tunes like “Kana Jehovha” before seamlessly transitioning into worship. Her powerful renditions of hymns like “Ndinoshamiswa Kwazvo” and “Munoshamisa Jeso” created a profound spiritual atmosphere, further captivating the audience.

Next up were The Cherayis, a gospel couple whose chemistry and talent lit up the stage. Minister Ellard Cherayi warmed up the crowd with songs like “Hakuna Zita SeraJesu” and “Nditungamire Jehovha,” before handing the spotlight to his wife, Sharon. Dressed in a colourful knitted kimono reminiscent of the Biblical Joseph’s coat, she dazzled the audience with her performance of “Fara Iwe.” The entire venue joined in a spirited sing-along, creating an unforgettable moment.

Finally, it was time for the man of the hour, Minister Mahendere. Loved by many, he took the stage with an infectious energy that resonated throughout the venue. This year marked the fourth edition of JWMF and Mahendere delivered a polished act that included a mix of worship and praise songs.

His set featured hits like “Messiah,” “Makanaka Jesu,” “Guta Rerutiziro,” “Ndinobuda Pakaoma,” and “Salt of the Earth.” Joined by his wife, Vimbai, Mahendere expressed his gratitude for the turnout, which filled the Belgravia Sports Club to capacity — a first for him at such a big venue.

Reflecting on his journey, Mahendere paid tribute to his mentors, the late Dr Oliver Mtukudzi and Baba Mechanic Manyeruke. “Thank you all for coming in your numbers; this means a lot to me. This festival also gives opportunities to talented young artistes like Arie and Harry, whom I have been nurturing. I’m thrilled they delivered alongside top artistes in the gospel industry,” he said.

One fan, Munyaradzi Sagaro from Highfield, shared his enthusiasm: “The show was mesmerising. I came with my family and we enjoyed every moment. I encourage Mahendere to consider making it a two-day event again; it’s uplifting and a great chance for networking. We didn’t feel the cold as we danced the night away!”

With such a successful festival, Mahendere and the line-up of artistes left an indelible mark on the hearts the attendees.

The night was not just a celebration of music; it was a testament to the power of community and faith, resonating in the hearts of many.
