Comedienne and musician Mai TT led UK-based businessman Mr Gilbert Kandiado to Chikurubi Female Prison where he donated Christmas goodies and provided lunch for 257 inmates on Christmas Eve.

Mr Kandiado runs Gilbert Facilities Limited, which offers cleaning services. His made the donation on Sunday to cheer up the inmates during this festive season.

Mai TT, who was accompanied by her friends and children, previously served time at the prison and reconnected with former colleagues in jail including Idah, who is serving a long sentence for murder.

Mr Kandiado promised to help clean several prisons, after learning about the challenges faced by inmates including expecting mothers and the babies living in the prison with their mothers.

“I run a cleaning company and that company will make sure some of the prisons are clean,” he said.

“I want to thank Mai TT for sharing with me some of the challenges faced by inmates. Some of the challenges she shared with me relate to babies with their mothers in prison, inmates not receiving visitors at all for one reason or the other, and expecting mothers.”

Among the inmates were seven babies, eight expecting mothers, 45 foreigners and 133 who are awaiting sentencing.

Jah Master and Shantel Sithole performed for the inmates.
