A 25-YEAR-OLD woman from Kezi has appeared in court after she left a 15-month-old infant unattended. The unwatched child then placed her leg inside a bucket of boiling water.

Eleonora Moyo pleaded guilty to ill-treatment of children and young persons when she appeared before Bulawayo Magistrate Patience Madondo, who remanded her in custody until today.

Prosecuting, Joseph Rugara told the court that on 23 February, at around 2PM, Moyo left a bucket of hot water inside a room where the infant was playing and went outside.

The infant placed her left leg inside the bucket with boiling water and got burnt.

Moyo returned and found that the infant was burnt. She strapped the child to her back as it cried to sleep in pain.

Moyo then informed the infants’ mother who was away at the time. The mother took the infant to a hospital and reported the matter to the police, leading to Moyo’s arrest.

The infant sustained extensive burns on her left leg and the medical report is still outstanding.
