Maisvorewa mines gold at Terry Long FSU Relays

TOP Zimbabwean female sprinter Vimbayi Maisvorewa buried herself in glory when she scooped a gold medal at the Terry Long FSU Relays in Florida, United States, at the weekend.

Maisvorewa is currently on an athletics scholarship at Auburn University and she was part of the college’s strong track and field team that continued its strong start to the outdoor season with impressive performances from the sprints core at the Terry Long FSU Relays hosted by the Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Florida.

According to reports from Tallahassee, the Auburn University women’s sprints squad brought home gold in four different events.

First Team All-America sprinter Maisvorewa cruised to a first-place finish in the women’s 400m event in 51.98 seconds. Maisvorewa’s time is the third fastest in the conference. Sophomore Deborah Oke finished second overall, crossing the line in 53.96. 

Led by senior Ashantae Harvey, the Auburn women took gold and silver in the 400m hurdles.

With a new career best in the event, Harvey finished in 58.59. Competing in her first meet of the outdoor season, sophomore Zuriel Reed took silver (59.63). 

In the 100m dash, senior Chante Clinkscale was the first to cross the finish line with a time of 11.34. Clinkscale also competed in the 200m, where she finished second overall (11.35).

The women’s 4x400m relay team had the fastest time of the day courtesy of Maisvorewa, Harvey, Reed and Oke.

The quartet’s time of 3:30.55 is currently the fastest in the country and the fourth fastest in programme history.

The long jump trio of junior Aaron Davis and sophomores Shonedra Richardson and Jay Avery finished in the top three on both the men’s and women’s sides. 

Making his season debut for the Tigers, Davis’s PR mark of 7.65m secured bronze and the No. 3 mark in the conference.

Richardson’s sixth and final jump of 6.03m earned her third place. Avery’s collegiate best jump of 7.80m was good enough for second place and the No. 9 furthest jump on Auburn’s Top 10 List. 

Junior Seth Allen had a toss of 57.07m on his second attempt in discus throw that was good enough for second place.   

On the women’s side of throws, freshman Camryn Massey competed in three throwing events.

The Gastonia, North Carolina native took silver in shot put (15.24m), fourth in discus (49.63m) and had a PR of 48.25m in hammer throw.   

Junior LeBron Bessick placed sixth in the men’s 400m, crossing the line in 47.82. 

Competing in her fourth outdoor season for Auburn, Senior Presley Miles ran 2:23.11 in the women’s 800m. 

Senior John Murray competed in two events for the Tigers. He finished 10th in long jump (6.82m) and 11th in the 110m hurdles (15.06). 

The Auburn track and field team will travel to Gainesville, Florida for the Pepsi Florida Relays at James G. Presley Stadium from April 4-5.
