Masvingo City’s anti-litter drive last week got a major boost after a Chinese company donated advanced solar-powered bins which are visible during the night. The bins, with a lockable bin tray, cellphone charging port and a light bulb for the evening, were donated by Satewave Technologies and installed at the city’s busiest sites.
Satewave is an integrated Zimbabwe-based Chinese technology services company operating in the telecommunications, electrical and civil construction sector.
Masvingo City Council chief environmental health officer Mr Zvapano Munganasa said the bins will go a long way in helping the local authority’s anti littering efforts.
“We have installed five solar bins in the city at most of the busiest places and we are hoping to install five others soon,” he said.
“We have partnered with public and private players in trying to keep the city clean. They were donated to us by Satewave Technologies. They are advertising their company through the bins.”
Mr Munganasa encouraged residents to dispose of their litter in bins to ensure that the city remains clean.
“We have the by-laws to arrest litterbugs, but they would hide behind the shortage of bins to throw away their litter,” he said. “Now that we have plenty of bins, we encourage residents to throw their litter in the bins so as to ensure that we keep the city clean.”
Satewave Technologies has already installed the same bins at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and Victoria Falls International Airport.
