JOHANNESBURG. – Limpopo-born superstar Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, better known as Makhadzi, is over the moon after winning her first-ever BET Award.
The singer received the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act Award at the ceremony, which took place at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, also her birthday.
“Winning the BET Award for Best New International Act is a dream come true,” Makhadzi said.
“It’s not just a win for me, but for every single person who believed in my music and my story.”
The 28-year-old was nominated alongside fellow South African Tyler ICU.
“This award is for Limpopo, for South Africa and for every aspiring artist out there,” she continued. Thank you to my fans, my team and everyone who has supported me. We did it together,” she said.
Another South African who scooped awards at the ceremony was Grammy-winning Tyla. She received awards in the Best New Artiste and Best International Act categories.
Though excited about her win at the prestigious awards, which honour people who contribute to black culture, Makhadzi opened up about “going through a lot” and having to borrow money to make it to the United States for the ceremony.
She admitted to going through a rough patch because she was paying off the taxman.
“Money that I get monthly I’m actually paying SARS (South African Revenue Service), so I end up not having money for myself,” she said. “For me to come here, I had to go to a mashonisa (loan shark).” – News24.com
