MALARIA claimed 12 lives throughout the country last week, bringing the year’s death toll to 52.
The majority of treated cases — 5 884 — were recorded in Manicaland province. A total of 9 755 cases were recorded during the same week, bringing the total number of cases treated this year to 41 329.
Recent statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care show that Mashonaland East also recorded a high number of people falling ill due to malaria — 1 680.
According to the district statistics, Chimanimani in Manicaland and Hurungwe in Mashonaland West recorded three deaths each while two people died in Guruve, Mashonaland Central. Mudzi in Mashonaland East, Beitbridge in Matabeleland South and Chiredzi in Masvingo recorded a death each.
One person died at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
“Of the cases reported, 1 285 and five deaths were under the age of five,” reads part of the Government’s weekly report on disease surveillance.
“All provinces are being reminded to investigate malaria deaths.”
