It’s another weekend and the good thing is that the weather is conducive for all activities, be it indoor or outdoor.
Weekends serve as time to rest from the responsibilities people have for the week.
After a long tiring day at work or school, the weekend is one of the things people look forward to the most.
These two days (Saturday and Sunday) charge people up and give them time to spend with their loved ones.
The Herald Arts crew conducted a survey on some of the events taking place across the country where people can relax and enjoy themselves this weekend.
Victor Kunonga hosts Malawian guitarist Erik Paliani.
Afro-jazz singer Victor Kunonga said he is happy to host Malawian guitarist Erik Paliani, who used to play and produce for the late Hugh Masekela.
Kunonga’s manager, Simon Mzungu, confirmed the latest development.
“Erik is currently in the country for a collaboration with Victor on his new project set for release this year,” he said. “He arrived last Monday and will be leaving next Monday.
“Erik is going to play some guitar on Victor Kunonga’s new album. Then for tomorrow we are hosting him at Alliance Francaise De in Harare under the event dubbed, “Jazz Jive with Victor Kunonga and Erik Paliani.”
Mzungu said Paliani will also do a solo show before being joined by Sam Mataure on one or two songs. Admission is US$10.
The Mafulenis perform at Theatre in the Park
Rooftop Promotions will be hosting the father and son concert with Jacob Mafuleni and his son Abel tonight at Theatre in the Park.
The concert will start at 7PM, while the gates will be opening at 6PM, while the admission is US$5, with tickets being sold at Theatre in the Park.
According to organisers of the show, all is set for the deep mbira concert.
Rooftop Promotions programmes coordinator, Passmore Ndlovu, encouraged the public to book their tickets in advance.
The duo is also excited to be performing at the venue.
Jacob is a well-respected artiste who has showcased his talents and gained notoriety for his performances as a musician, dancer, instrument maker, song arranger and teacher since 1992. Winning an award for best instrumentalist in Zimbabwe, Jacob has performed and toured worldwide with many renowned bands and dance troupes.
Jacob sings, dances, plays mbira, marimba, guitar and drums.
Abel started his career in music at a very tender age under the tutelage of his parents Jacob and Martha.
He developed interest in arrangements for marimba and mbira in Afro-jazz, Zimbabwean sungura music and traditional mbira repertoire.
His deep interest in traditional music enabled him to tour countries such as China and the United States showcasing his skills.
He took up short musical classes in the US and also managed to record marimba tracks in California Santa Cruz.
Twelve models for Miss
Supranational pageant
Organisers for the beauty pageant dubbed Miss Supranational 2023 have said this year’s edition will see 12 models vying for the coveted title.
The event set for Sunday at the Venue in Avondale, Harare will see renowned fashion designers, celebrities, musicians and socialites attending. In an interview with The Herald Arts, pageant organiser, Tatenda Njanike, said models were set to showcase their talents at the event.
“The queen will have the opportunity to represent Zimbabwe at the Miss Global in Poland,” he said. “It is not just a beauty pageant, but we are also celebrating the integration of Zimbabwean cultures.
“It is a platform for empowerment and cross-cultural exchange for Zimbabwean youths through talent and art.”
There would be performances by Nyasha David and a runway showcase by Nandi the designer.
The pageant will be judged by Jackie Mgido, Samantha Tshuma, Mudiwa Hood, Tapfumanei Munenge and VD by Varaidzo.
Sungura meets AfroJazz
at Bar Rouge
Sungura artiste Romeo Gasa has promised fireworks at his show with Afro-jazz musician Agga Nyabinde tonight at Bar Rouge.
The event, which has been dubbed “modern sungura meets Afrojazz night” will see Gasa performing his first show in the city soon after his tour in South Africa.
In an interview with The Herald Arts, Gasa promised fireworks.
“It is my first show in town ever since coming back from South Africa.” he said. “It’s happening at Longchen Mall and I am happy to be supported by jazz crooner Agga Nyabinde.
“We are promising fireworks just like we did at the Uhuru Gala in Mt Darwin recently. People should come in numbers to witness the Simbi Hombe brand.”
Chimurenga music at Cresta Oasis
Cresta Oasis is the place to be tonight when it hosts Kurai Makore and Black Lions.
Makore, nephew to Thomas Mapfumo, will also hold another show at Madhadha Leisure Central at Zindoga Shopping Centre, Waterfalls on Sunday.
Kurai has a slot to perform at the venue on Sundays.
Kurai, who thrilled fans at the recently held Africa Explosion gig headlined by Koffi Olomide, has vowed to usher out his artistic verve at both weekend shows.
He is currently on a serious audience building mission. It’s a show not to be missed by all Chimurenga music lovers yearning for mature music.
