THE 3,2km rehabilitated stretch of Mama Mafuyana Drive –- formerly Lorraine Drive — has been opened to traffic, marking another milestone in Harare’s ongoing road modernisation programme.
This comes as authorities intensify assessments of other roads across the capital, requiring urgent rehabilitation.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona and Minister of State for Harare Provincial Affairs and Devolution Senator Charles Tawengwa led a delegation to open the road, which was redone by a local contractor, Fossil Contracting.
The upgrading of Mama Mafuyana Drive forms part of broader infrastructure improvements underway in Harare.

Recently, Minister Mhona ordered Fossil Contracting to redo the resurfacing of Mama Mafuyana Drive, which links Westgate shopping mall to Harare Drive, after substandard work saw the road curving in several sections.
Residents and motorists have hailed the Government for ensuring that the road is rehabilitated and trafficable.
In an interview Minister Mhona said, “Thank you so much the Fourth Estate, thank you for coming and as always to broadcast what the Second Republic is doing and I am happy today representing the Ministry that finally Mama Mafuyana Drive has been opened to traffic and you know the history of this road that when we were attending to the SADC roads it was one of the detour roads that we were using apparently heavy traffic was directed on this particular street which wasn’t possible to accommodate heavy trucks and then it collapsed which was also a reasonable cause to the citizenry to question how the road was constructed..
“I am happy that we assured the citizenry that the contractor was going to redo the work and today we are witnessing this wonderful piece of work that has been done but also to say to answer to the people of Zimbabwe to say under the Second Republic championed by His Excellency Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa we take seriously issues to do with quality and whenever you do your work and if you don’t do it precisely we actually mandate you to redo it.”
