Man (56) jailed over bread

for eating a loaf of bread and leaving only a small piece.
Jack Mhizha (56) of Gombe Village in Seke will however, serve an effective 10 months after Chitungwiza magistrate Jessie Kufa suspended five months on conditions of good behaviour.
Mhizha had pleaded guilty to assaulting his two children aged 12 and seven.
“Yes, as a parent I assaulted the children after they wronged me. I used a whip and stick but I did not chase them away from home,” he told the court in mitigation.
Prosecutor Mr Luke Mutupe told the court that on January 12 this year, the two children came back from school and ate the bread.
Mr Mutupe said when Mhizha returned home he was incensed when he discovered that the children had eaten the bread.
Mhizha shouted at the children and chased them away.
The children, the court heard, sought refuge at their stepmother’s home but she sent them back. They however, sought refuge in the bush because they feared their father.
The children were assisted by some villagers who took them home where they got a beating from Mhizha.
The State also produced a medical report that confirmed multiple cuts all over their bodies.
Mhizha was charged under the Children’s Protection and Adoption Act.
The court then ruled that the father was not capable of looking after his children.
The magistrate ruled that the children be put under the care of a local children’s home until a relative who is capable of looking after them was found.
