Man (65) rapes, infects neighbour’s daughter (12) with STI

The incident, which was yesterday confirmed by the police spokesperson for Matabeleland North Inspector Billie Dube, happened on 11 November.

The man, (name withheld to protect the minor), allegedly followed the girl as she was going to Mantshalini Business Centre on 11 November and grabbed her from behind.

“He allegedly trailed her to a bushy area, grabbed her and wrestled her to the ground. She, however, managed to free herself and fled from the scene. The man gave chase and caught up with her. He then raped her once,” said Insp Dube.

He said the man threatened the child with death if ever she told anyone about the incident.

“Fortunately, the issue came to light on 17 November when the child’s grandmother (65) noticed that she was walking with difficulty. She took her to Luphaka Clinic where it was discovered that she had an STI,” said the police spokesperson.

He said nurses at the clinic interviewed the girl and she disclosed that her elderly neighbour had raped her.

“A report was made to police in Lupane, leading to the arrest of the suspect. The complainant was taken to St Luke’s Hospital for a medical examination and treatment,” said Insp Dube.
He said it was disappointing that elders, who should be looking after children, are the ones abusing them.

“Parents and guardians should not trust anyone with their children. People that society looks up to, to safeguard children’s rights, are increasingly becoming the major culprits. Parents should be open with their children about abuse and what it means. They should always encourage them to speak out whenever anyone abuses them,” said Insp Dube.

He said parents should believe their children when they report abuse.

Insp Dube said parents should support their children to recover from the trauma of abuse.

“It is important not to make deals with abusers. They should be reported to the police and those who try to cover up abuse face arrest as accomplices,” he said.
