Police have arrested a 74-year-old man in connection with murder and attempted murder cases which occurred at Mudavanhu Village in Chivhu last week on February 20.

In a statement posted on its official social media platforms, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of Never Nhire (74) following a violent incident that left one man dead and another injured.

According to police, Nhire allegedly stabbed one of the complainants once on the head with an okapi knife, accusing him of spreading rumours that he was involved in relationships with several women in the village.

The complainant managed to escape from the scene after the attack and was rushed to Nharira Clinic for treatment. Police said he is in a stable condition.

After the initial assault, the suspect allegedly proceeded to the homestead of Itai Chidangure (62), where he stabbed him once on the neck over the same allegations.

Chidangure died on the spot.

His body was subsequently taken to Chivhu General Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

Police have since taken Nhire into custody and investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The ZRP has urged members of the public to resolve disputes amicably and to refrain from resorting to violence when faced with misunderstandings or allegations within their communities.
