IN an incident which left villagers in Igusi Village in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North province shocked, a 79-year-old man woke up to find his kitchen hut up in flames.
This was heard when Trymore Ngwenya (23) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Maxwell Ncube facing a charge of malicious damage to property.
He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody to 17 February pending further investigations.
Circumstances are that on 29 December 2023, Alick Ngwenya went to bed, leaving everything in place.
However, at around 10pm, he was awakened by the commotion caused by neighbouring villagers who were desperately trying to extinguish the fire that had engulfed his kitchen hut.
Despite all their efforts, the fire could not be contained and this resulted in the destruction of the house and all the belongings inside.
The loss included kitchen utensils, two bags of sorghum, mealie-meal and water buckets, with an estimated value of US$479.
