A man from Glen View 1 in Harare, has been arrested for illegal possession of firearms.
Floyd Chinamhora (48), who allegedly threatened to shoot his wife at the height of a domestic dispute, had unlicensed firearms at his home.
Posting on their Twitter handle yesterday, the police said they arrested Chinamhora on Saturday.
He was found in possession of an unlicensed shotgun double barrel which was found hidden under the bed.
“The suspect was also found in possession of an air pallet gun which was stashed in a bag on top of a wardrobe,” said the police. “The suspect had threatened to shoot his wife during a domestic dispute.”
His arrest comes after police said they will arrest anyone found in possession of unlicensed guns at the expiry of a moratorium to take any such guns to the nearest police station between August 8 and September 30.
President Mnangagwa granted the amnesty on anyone that voluntarily surrendered their firearms to the police.
With the deadline for the amnesty having passed last Friday, police said they will now embark on physical checks and verifications on all residential and business premises where illegal firearms are suspected to be.
The amnesty came after a surge in cases of armed robbery across the country.
