THE biblical David is known for slaying Goliath, the giant who wanted to make life a living hell for the Israelites. In contrast, a 27-year-old man from Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo, David Machekano, represents a modern-day Goliath, terrorising people in his community by stealing from them. Machekano was arrested for a series of thefts in Nkulumane.

Circumstances are that on 6 December 2024, at around 11am, Machekano entered Nomzamo Nkiwane’s house in Nkulumane, opened the boot of the parked Toyota Alteza motor vehicle by breaking the locking system and he allegedly stole a car jack, spare whee and a tool box containing spanners.

He is alleged to have fled the scene, leaving the car boot open. Machekano stole property worth US$130 and nothing was recovered.

It is further alleged that on 7 December 2024, at around 4am, Machekano entered Mthokozisi Ndlovu’s house in Nkulumane, stole the complainant’s driver’s licence and ZIM Switch card, which were in the ash tray of Ndlovu’s unlocked Kombi and went away.

The value of the stolen property was US$150 and all was recovered.

It was also alleged that on 6 December 2024, at around 11pm, Machekano entered Tivie Mpofu’s house in Nkulumane, used a wire through an open window to steal a satchel containing a wallet with US$15 and an Itel power bank, which was on top of a table.

He is alleged to have gone away unnoticed. The value of the stolen property was US$30 and nothing was recovered.

The matters were reported to the police, and investigations were carried out, leading to the arrest of the accused person and his subsequent appearance in court.
