A 38-YEAR-OLD man from Dangamvura Area 16 in Mutare has been arrested for motor vehicle theft after police discovered three stolen vehicles in his possession.
The arrest occurred on July 25.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the arrest of Marshall Munashe Munyuru.
He said detectives have been looking for Munyuru in connection with a 2023 fraud case in Bindura.
“The accused is the son of Junior Makochera, a car dealer in Bindura, specializing in imported vehicles. Munyuru was suspected of possessing five smuggled vehicles. On July 25, CID Mutare followed up on a lead and located him in Dangamvura Area 16. Detectives found keys to a Toyota Fortuner and Ford Ranger during a search of the premises,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Munyuru allegedly claimed the vehicles belonged to his mother, Makochera, who confirmed ownership and promised to provide importation papers.
However, a check with the Central Vehicle Registry revealed that the Ford Ranger, Toyota Fortuner, and grey Mercedes-Benz were not registered.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said Interpol NCB Harare verified that all three vehicles had been stolen in South Africa.
The Toyota Fortuner was stolen on July 11, while the Ford Ranger was smuggled in November 2023.
The Mercedes-Benz was stolen and smuggled into the country in October 2024.
The complainants have yet to come forward.
Munyuru appeared before the Mutare Magistrates Court and was remanded to July 30 for a bail application.
The three stolen vehicles are currently held at CID Mutare.
