Man attacks cops in wild attempt to save sister from drug bust

B-Metro Reporter

BEITBRIDGE was rocked by high drama on 7 May when a routine drug raid in Dulibadzimu turned into a full-blown family meltdown.

Lucia Nyoni (43) was arrested after police found her in possession of dagga and bottles of Benylin Cough syrup, the codeine, packed concoction notorious for being abused as a street drug. Officers swooped in as part of Zimbabwe’s ongoing national anti-drug blitz, “No to Dangerous Drugs and Illicit Substances: See Something, Say Something,” which aims to crush the drug scourge wreaking havoc across communities.

But just as officers, police said in a statement on X, were sealing the deal, in stormed Lucia’s younger brother, Rhodes Nyoni (34), breathing fire and spoiling for a fight.

Instead of calming the situation, Rhodes went ballistic, violently protesting his sister’s arrest. Witnesses say he stormed in fists first. He tried to block the cops, leading to a scuffle that ended with him in cuffs, charged with defeating the course of justice.

In one fell swoop, the Nyoni siblings landed themselves behind bars, one for drug possession, the other for trying to play the gangster version of family protector.

Police have vowed to continue swooping on drug hotspots and warned that anyone obstructing their work will face the full wrath of the law.

Looks like the Nyoni siblings will have to cool off — without the Benylin.
