Wife beater Elijah Khumalo (39) lost his wife Sithembiso Mathwasa (27) who left him to stay with her parents because she was tired of abuse and accusations of sleeping with a local teacher.

When she told him to go, he accused her of spending his fortune with lovers,A leaving him poorer.

In a fit of rage he picked up an axe and struck her while the children watched helplessly as their mother died slowly.

After the heinous crime he fled and his in-laws rushed to the room but nothing could be done to save Sithembiso.

The police launched a manhunt and the suspect was arrested. He had the deceasedas phone on him.

He didnat waste the policeas time and has since appeared before Lupane resident magistrate Ndumo Masuku facing a murder charge.

He was remanded in custody to 22 November and advised to apply for bail at the Bulawayo High court.
