A 24-YEAR-OLD Bulilima man beat up his four-year-old daughter to death as punishment for failing to close a fowl run and a goat’s pen at their homestead. Ngoni Tshuma reportedly flogged the child with a jatropha switch and a piece of wire. A court heard the girl died a few hours later from injuries sustained in the brutal assault.

Tshuma, who is from Village 5 in Dombodema area, appeared on initial remand before Plumtree magistrate Gideon Ruvetsa charged with murder. He was not asked to plead as he was remanded in custody to October 13.

Prosecuting, Clemence Shawarira said Tshuma assaulted his daughter on Saturday evening. He said the girl died in the middle of the night while her family was asleep.

Shawarira said so brutal was the September 26 beating that Tshuma’s wife raced out of their home and pleaded with neighbours to help calm her husband down.

The girl proceeded to bed after the assault and her mother discovered that she had died in the middle of the night.

Tshuma who was arrested immediately after the incident reportedly consumed poison in 2011 in a bid to commit suicide after he was charged with assault.
