A GWANDA woman was severely assaulted by her friend’s husband for allegedly taking his wife to traditional healers behind his back. Togaranashe Dube of West Nicholson yesterday appeared before Gwanda magistrate Arafat Kozanai facing charges of assault. He pleaded guilty and was fined $40. Kozanai told Dube to desist from taking the law into his own hands but seek peaceful means to solve matters rather than resort to violence.
Prosecutor, Takunda Mafudze told the court that on May 18, at around 9PM, Dube and the complainant, Edzisai Shoko, had an exchange of words after he accused her of taking his wife to traditional healers.
After the verbal exchange, Dube slapped Shoko several times. Shoko reported the matter to the police leading to Dube’s arrest. In an unrelated matter, a gold panner in the Makwe area was sentenced to perform 60 hours of community service for assaulting a colleague over a $10 debt.
Mthokozisi Nkomo, 22, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to assault when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate in charge, Sheila Nazombe. Nkomo told the court that he assaulted the complainant, Thando Mokoni, a fellow panner, after he reneged on paying his debt on the agreed date.
Prosecuting, Mafudze told the court early last week, the pair met at Makwe Business Centre where they were drinking beer. Mokoni ran out of cash and asked Nkomo to lend him $10 promising to pay back when they got to their place of residence.
However, Mokoni failed to honour the promise telling Nkomo that he would give him his money the following day when he found some gold. Out of fury, Nkomo started assaulting Mokoni with fists and open hands. Mokoni sustained minor injuries.
