An overly jealous Gweru husband pushed his wife into a fire following a phone call he suspected was from a lover.
Cannan Mapfumo (29) of Mkoba 7 was dragged to court by his wife Matilda Moyo. Mapfumo pleaded guilty when he appeared before Gweru magistrate Musayiwona Shotgame.
In his judgment, the magistrate bemoaned the rise in domestic violence cases.
a�?Domestic violence cases are increasing. Instead of solving disputes by discussions, you decided to fight your wife.
She is having difficulties in walking right now, therefore I will sentence you to 420 hours of community service, furthermore, you are sentenced to six months in prison which are wholly suspended for five years on condition that you will not commit the same crime within the next five years,a�? he said.
Prosecuting for the state, Lloyd Mavhiza told the court that Mapfumo arrived home at around 9PM from a beer hall and found his wife Matildah Moyo talking on her phone. He asked her who she was talking to and she took time to respond to him. Out of anger, Mapfumo then pushed his wife into the fire before taking the cellphone away from her.
He then assaulted his wife all over the body using a plank before leaving her lying helpless on the ground.
Moyo sustained burns on her legs andA� suffered a painful back. She was medically examined and the report was produced in court as evidence.
