A MAN is believed to have killed himself, about three weeks after paying lobola, in protest over his church’s decision to bar him from taking his wife home soon after completion of the customary formalities.
Cain Mumba, 23, wanted to immediately take his wife, Thelma Hliwayo, home soon after completing the lobola payments.
However, the church leaders barred him from doing so until after a white wedding.
He then downed rat poison and killed himself just EIGHTEEN days after paying lobola.
The church leaders said he could only take his wife, and sleep with her, after a white wedding.
This riled Cain, who wanted to be with Thelma soon after paying lobola for her.
Cain paid lobola for Thelma on September 5 but he was not allowed to take her to his house.
His family’s spokesperson, only identified as Nyakabawu, confirmed the tragedy.
“We have been robbed of a loving man and promising leader of our family.
“Cain wanted to take his wife soon after paying lobola arguing that waiting for a white wedding would pave way for the devil.
“His church leaders denied him and he became bitter.
“We did not expect that it would end in this way.
“To him Roora Day was bigger than a white wedding and it affected him,” she said.
Mourners are gathered in Budiriro 4 and burial arrangements are yet to be announced.
