A CHIVI man committed suicide by drinking rogor pesticide after receiving a letter from his father requesting money for his upkeep. Police said the now deceased, Lovemore Hungwe, 22, of Denge village under Chief Mahlongwe’s area, had a heated argument with his father, Jonah Hungwe, who allegedly wanted money from his son.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko said the incident happened on Sunday afternoon in Kofi Village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane.
Insp Goko said the now deceased received a letter from his father, Jonah Hungwe, asking him for money.
“Lovemore received a letter from his father in Chivi requesting for cash. Apparently, Lovemore was not pleased with his father’s request and decided to confront him.
“He phoned his father complaining that he did not have money and an argument ensued. After the phone call, Lovemore left his bedroom for his garden and came back after 10 minutes,” he said.
Insp Goko said a fellow tenant, Sibusisiwe Shava, 24, smelt a strange smell that she suspected to be rogor coming from his bedroom.
He said Shava went to investigate and found Lovemore in great pain, unable to talk.
Said Insp Goko: “Shava tried to administer first aid but her efforts were fruitless as Lovemore eventually died. The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and his body was ferried to Zvishavane District Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.”
Insp Goko said police were still investigating the matter in a bid to establish the facts surrounding Lovemore’s death.
The police appealed to members of the public to desist from resorting to suicide when faced with socio-economic challenges.
“Members of the public should resolve their differences in a more humane way rather than taking their lives when faced with challenges or disputes. We should respect life since it is a gift from God,” said Insp Goko.
