A jilted man allegedly demanded $3,000 as compensation for a failed relationship, claiming his ex-girlfriend used him for the past seven years, a court heard.Billy Sibanda, 38, appeared in court yesterday facing physical abuse charges after he grabbed Rossewitah Mufandaidza, 30, by the throat and demanded to see her lovers’ love text messages after accusing her of infidelity.
Magistrate Sheunesu Matova remanded Sibanda to today for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to the charge.
Prosecuting, Kingston Mkanganwi told the court how Sibanda locked Mufandaidza in his home after she had terminated their relationship.
“On August 20 at around 6PM Sibanda went home angry after being told by Mufandaidza that she no longer wanted to stay with him.
“Sibanda locked the doors and spent the whole night threatening to kill her and demanded $3,000 as compensation for using him for the past seven years,” said Mkanganwi.
Mkanganwi told the court that the following morning, Sibanda took Mufandaidza’s two cellphones and demanded to see love messages that her boyfriends had been sending her.
The court also heard how Sibanda grabbed Mufandaidza by the throat after she tried to leave the house.
“Mufandaidza forcibly took her cellphones from Sibanda and tried to run away but he caught up with her and grabbed her by the throat before taking the cellphones back,” said Mkanganwi.
Mufandaidza made a report to the police, leading to Sibanda’s arrest.
In mitigation, Sibanda begged magistrate Matova to be lenient with him, claiming he acted out of anger as he was being tormented by his lover’s infidelity.
He however, failed to give any evidence of the love messages he alleged Mufandaidza had received from boyfriends.
