A MBERENGWA man died when he was trapped in a mine shaft at about 10pm on Saturday. Police identified the man as Abel Sibanda (29) of Tsikira Village under Chief Chizungu. Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Sibanda was mining gold at Mzezewa Mine with four workmates. “While the five were mining, a mass of soil mixed with stones fell on Abel Sibanda who was a few metres  from others. Sibanda was trapped from waist downwards. He screamed for help and his fellow workers alerted others who were nearby and they rescued him after about 45 minutes,” said Insp Mahoko.

He said Sibanda was complaining of abdominal pains and was rushed to Mberengwa District Hospital but died on the way.

“The mine is registered in the name of Mr Kumbirai Kufakunesu (62) of Honyowe Village, Chief Bvute’s area. We, however, want to urge all miners to put up safety measures as outlined by the industrial safety regulations. It is also wise to keep first aid kits and trained personnel ready in cases of emergency,” said Insp Mahoko.
